The second half followed an eerily similar script. Athletic sat even deeper if that was possible. The frustration mounted. Lewandowski dropped deep to collect the ball, desperate to get involved, but that only congested the midfield further. Pedri was the conductor in midfield, completing 94 passes and constantly searching for the killer ball. His vision created the opening for the first goal, and his movement pulled Athletic's midfield out of position all night.

Gavi provided the energy and directness that Barça desperately needed. His goal was excellent, but more importantly, his willingness to drive at defenders gave Athletic something different to worry about.

Raphinha worked hard on the right, though his final product remains inconsistent. Three crosses found teammates, seven didn't. That ratio needs to improve.

Looking Ahead

Three points secured, clean sheet maintained, but this performance won't concern Barcelona's bigger rivals. Athletic made it easy to look ordinary by refusing to engage, and Barça lacked the creativity to break them down with any fluency.

Against teams that actually venture forward, there will be more space to exploit. Against defensive blocks like this, Barcelona will need better solutions than hoping for deflections and moments of individual magic. The season is young, but these are the games that separate title winners from also-rans.
